Director's Note

WARNING: This is NOT your mama’s Shakespeare- and thank god cause I could never really understand it. This is Shakespeare for those that used the “No Fear Shakespeare” book- where Shakespeare’s classic "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" meets a whirlwind of irreverent comedy and unapologetic exuberance. As the director and adapter of this new incarnation, I’m thrilled to share our fresh take on this beloved tale, reimagined through a lens of slapstick humor and a dance party extravaganza (yes you heard that right)- come ready to shake some ass!

Why did I adapt & re-write this show? Cause I wanted to, lol. My soul needed to laugh and I guess they say to write what you want to watch and this was it.

Why this play, and why now? Well, let’s face it—our world could use a hefty dose of radical joy. In a world increasingly marred by existential loneliness and a sense of disconnection, I believe in the transformative power of laughter, glitter, and a whole lot of fabulous chaos. We’re not just putting on a show, we’re throwing a party where joy and connection are the ultimate VIP’s.

The choice to infuse the play with slapstick comedy and queer dance elements is not merely for entertainment’s sake, but as a deliberate act of celebration and liberation. This approach allows us to explore themes of love, identity, and self-discovery with a fresh, invigorating energy. Our goal is to invite you into a world where the absurd and the whimsical not only amuse but also invite deeper reflections on our shared human experience.

In this production, we find solace and unity through laughter and dance, using humor as a bridge to connect with each other and with ourselves. By reimagining "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" in this irreverent style, we seek to remind audiences of the joy that can arise from embracing our true selves and celebrating our diverse identities.

I hope you enjoy this BUCKwild, joyous ride through the fairyland of MIDSUMMER. I invite you to celebrate together, find comfort in our shared laughter, and reconnect with the radical joy that binds us all.

Artistically yours,

Nikko Kimzin
